Last week I had a taste of alpine mountaineering, and it easily was one of the most physically grueling activities I've ever done. It took our crew about 3.5 hours to summit Mt Washington, while we experienced wind chills around -50°. It was six hours of hiking up then down the mountain in the snow. We didn't have the privilege of stopping or resting because if you stopped to rest, your body temperature would drop, and you'd freeze to death (only slightly exaggerating).
I learned that preparation is vital; having the right gear and knowing what to expect made all the difference. It was a phenomenal experience, that left me in pain but on a high.
Thanks to my fellow explorers for such a special experience
