🗳 Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 8, but many voters already are casting vote-by-mail ballots or taking advantage of early voting. 👉 So, why does the Editorial Board make election recommendations? "The simple answer is to help voters gain a better idea of who's the best candidate for each race. They are research-based, discussed thoroughly and represent the opinion of the Editorial Board. The key word there is “opinion.” We know our readers may not agree with every candidate we recommend. That’s OK, and it’s inevitable. Think of candidate recommendations as well-researched suggestions on whom to vote for. Like editorials, they are written by the Editorial Board, a group of opinion journalists whose views do not represent that of the news side of the Miami Herald." 👉 So, what’s the process like? "First we give each candidate the same survey, with basic questions to help us with backgrounding research. Then we invite candidates to interview with the Board. We ask candidates questions about issues related to their constituents and their views on public policy. This year, some Republican candidates did not respond to the Board’s request for an interview. This affected whether or not we were able to make recommendations in some races. After we learn as much as possible about the candidates, the Board convenes to discuss the pros and cons of candidates in each race. The Board members seek to reach a consensus on the recommendations, but not every decision is unanimous. We write recommendations as thoughtfully and as honestly as possible.” 🔗 Read the full list of recommendations by visiting the link in our bio.
