Only 2 more weeks to see ‘Roots’ in Times Square - Charles Gaines’ [@charlesgainesstudio] grove of seven Sweetgum trees. Stripped, painted, preserved, and inverted with their vast root systems reaching skyward, these haunting and dystopic forms call back to the systemic excavation of the indigenous landscape, once a diverse ecosystem of natural abundance. Gaines weaves the story of the Sweetgum tree, native to the island of Manahatta and much of the eastern seaboard, with the complicated history of the 400+ year settlement of the United States. ‘Roots’ marks Gaines’ first public art commission and the inaugural chapter of ‘The American Manifest’ a multi-sited exhibition presented in collaboration with Creative Time [@creativetime] and Governors Island Arts [@governorsisland]. Want to learn more? 🌳Join us on Thursdays at 2:30pm for a Public Art Talk & Tour exploring Charles Gaines’ ‘Roots’ 🖼️ on Duffy Square. ‘Roots’ will be on view daily through September 23 on the Broadway pedestrian plaza between 46th and 47th St. To find out more about ‘Roots’ and ‘The American Manifest’ by Charles Gaines head to our official website (🔗 in bio) and follow our partners @creativetime and @governorsisland. Stay tuned for Chapter Two of ‘The American Manifest’ on Governors Island this fall! 📹: Courtesy of Creative Time 🎵: Original score of ‘Manifestos 4: The Dred and Harriet Scott Decision’ by Charles Gaines #TheAmericanManifest #Manifestos4 #CharlesGaines #DredScott #TimesSquareArts #TsqArts #CreativeTime #govislandarts
