This week I lost my close friend, Ken Tominaga. I am beyond blessed to have known him for two decades. He was a man of humility yet took great pride in everything he did. He was a beautiful soul—honest, a constant man of his word, and his smile always lit up the room.
The first time I met Ken, my wife Diane and I were dining at the counter at Hana. He said he would take care of us and by the end of the evening, we had found the most magical restaurant, man, and family. And that was the beauty of Ken—that same smile and energy was infectious and present in every place he went and in everything he did.
Over the next 15 years, my family and I regularly found ourselves at Hana—excited to be in the room with such a special man and his family. It was our restaurant of choice; my kids always wanted to see Ken and we got to know his wife and kids, who were always there. Hana was a family restaurant and when you were at Hana, you were part of that family. Ken made that connection effortless and I credit Ken with teaching and showing me what it really means to run a restaurant like your home.
I was so fortunate to have our friendship extend into a business partnership with the opening of PABU. What excited me the most about our adventure was that Ken could share the energy, talent, and passion that I loved so much with more people. He impacted so many people’s lives—personally and professionally as a teacher and mentor while still being a wonderful father and husband. Ken meant so much to so many people and will be greatly missed.
