Japan Society Refashioning: CFGNY and Wataru Tominaga Nov 18th 2022 - Feb 19th 2023 Japan Society is pleased to present Refashioning: CFGNY and Wataru Tominaga, the institution's first exhibition devoted to the art of contemporary fashion. Comprised of two distinct yet complementary installations, the exhibition examines the ways in which these two practices experiment with artistic mediums beyond conventional forms of dress to challenge notions of subjectivity. A series of related programs includes a talk with the artists, a workshop, and an exclusive presentation of CFGNY’s latest collection. Refashioning describes an act of alteration, modification, or metamorphosis. On one hand a straightforward play on the word fashion, the term refashioning here extends to the process of dissection and critical analysis performed on prevailing narratives of nationhood, race, and relationality. In refashioning given accounts of subject formation, CFGNY offers a material mediation on archival interpretation, laying bare the phenomena shaping historical narratives.
