Land of the Lotus Eaters, a group exhibition at Louise Alexander Gallery in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, Italy from 2 July – 4 September 2022. Exhibited Artists Highlight: Sophie von Hellermann and Anya Paintsil Sophie von Hellermann was born in Munich, Germany in 1975 and lives and works in London and Margate, United Kingdom. Her romantic, pastel-washed canvases draw inspiration from fables, legends and classical mythology. She applies pure pigment directly onto unprimed canvas, using broad-brushed washes to imbue her paintings with a sense of weightlessness. Anya Paintsil Born 1993 in Wrexham, North Wales, Anya Paintsil is a Welsh and Ghanaian artist working primarily with textiles. From rug hooking to embroidery, her assemblages evoke tactile tapestry on the one hand, and constitute semi-sculptural interventions on the other. The artwork exhibited is a portrait of 'Anticlea of Ithaca', Odysseus' mother, who dies from grief (or commits suicide in some version of) whilst Odysseus is on his journey back to Ithaca. Inspired by the passage in Book XI, where Odysseus visits the underworld to seek the advice of the dead prophet Tiresias.
