The opening scene in the film was actually a challenging operation. At first, we were gonna have @tannergud hop in the van with Rob and cruise the coast looking for surf and try and include some dialogue. So we picked a crisp winter morning and I picked up tanner at his place around 530 am and headed to Robs place. Once there, we got everything ready, Rob at the wheel, Tanner sitting shotgun, microphones recording, camera rolling, I give Rob the thumbs up to start the car and...
nothing.
The creeper van decided it wasn’t the day.
Some time passed and before I knew it, it was March 2020 and the world was starting to get a little weird. I checked the weather forecast and it didn’t look good (the second image is a screenshot of the actual forecast). A one hour window of light at sunrise, then rain for as far as the forecast read. We decided, with looming lockdowns, to give it another shot. So I got to Robs place in the dark, got everything ready, shot the first shot, set up the shot where he starts the car and she fired up perfectly. That’s why that shot hangs for a bit and Rob looks so stoked. That was a big moment for us. We cruised down towards seaside, the van started smoking inside the car, and we had no idea why, we set up the last shot which is the frame grab from this post, and about 15 seconds after Rob drove through the frame, the sun went behind the clouds for the rest of the day, then it rained for 10 straight days, the the world locked down and i didn’t see him again for probably 6 months.
All that to say, I have a whole new respect for filmmakers and the trouble they go through for every little shot that goes into their films.
