We are pleased to announce the completion of a recent commission by Alyson Shotz at the newly constructed Billie Tisch Center for Integrated Sciences at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY. Entitled “Entanglement”, this monumental sculpture is comprised of painted stainless steel which is suspended in the air. Like many of Shotz’s works, the appearance of “Entanglement” – its form and color - shifts dramatically depending upon light and vantage point. The sculpture’s conceptual relationship to the Center for Integrated Sciences is seamless. Shotz explains: “When two particles, such as a pair of photons or electrons, become entangled, they remain connected even when separated by vast distances. I like to imagine this sculpture as the pathway between two connected particles in space. Spaced defines this sculpture, and I’ve used the least amount of steel to hold the form. The shape itself comes out of my long-standing interest in knots and non-orientable surfaces like the Mobius strip. The importance of entangled structures is fundamental in a broad range of diverse disciplines—from DNA proteins to turbulent plasmas, to fluid dynamics, to the quantum-mechanical foundations of nature itself.” Images: Alyson Shotz Entanglement, 2022 Stainless steel, paint 270 x 206 x 206 inches Photos: Nicholas Knight #alysonshotz #derekellergallery
