💥 Back with another one! 💥
For my latest piece for @kindredbyparents, I was asked to write about what it means to raise free, Black children.
This world often seems hellbent on removing and destroying the innocence of children—and that is even more amplified with Black children. State violence, wealth inequity, generational trauma are the backdrop of so many - if not all - Black families. Fear is often the leading factor in the raising of our children. But how do we begin to recognize that our fears as parents can become restrictive and limiting for our children? In our desperation to protect them from everything bad in this world, are we also depriving them of its joys?
I spoke with @beequammie, a powerhouse woman and mother, whom I admire deeply and have often looked to in my own new motherhood journey, about how she models joy for her two beautiful girls.
I also spoke with Trina Greene Brown, founder of @parentingforliberation, about her activism work, the org’s mission, and how our job as parents of Black children is a revolutionary one.
And as always - many, many thanks to one of my fave editors @kellyglassthejournalist for trusting me to write this special piece.
Link to read is in my bio! 🧡
