“All the stuff in the lab, everything that we did, meant that somebody else’s life was changed forever.” – Prof Alex Heazell, Clinical Director of our Stillbirth Research Centre After losing 5 babies, Clare and Rob went to see Prof Alex at our Manchester Rainbow Clinic. After looking at her pregnancy history, he noticed signs of a rare condition called chronic histiocytic intervillostis (CHI), which is where the mother’s immune system doesn’t accept the placenta in the womb. With a special treatment plan, Prof Alex and the Manchester team helped Clare and Rob bring home baby Lyla in 2018. With no proven treatments to cure CHI, the team’s ground-breaking research is vital to making pregnancy safer for all – and they’ve now developed treatment guidelines that will help doctors and midwives at other hospitals provide the best possible care for others like Clare. At Tommy’s, our mission is to make the UK the safest place in the world to give birth. That's why our teams at Manchester, and across the country, are working tirelessly to understand the causes of pregnancy complications and loss. Every day, we’re one step closer to ending preventable baby loss. Baby Loss Awareness Week is a time for us to remember the babies gone too soon – but for us at Tommy’s, it’s also a moment to highlight the importance of research and care which will help save lives and prevent future heartbreak. This work is only possible with your support, so thank you 💕 To find out more about our research projects, past and present, visit our website, tommys.org. #BLAW #BLAW22 #BabyLossAwarenessWeek #PregnancyResearch #SavingBabiesLives
