I tried to visit for sunset, but arrived after the golden light had passed the top of the canyon walls. Considering my options, I decided to capture some blue hour exposures to use for a composite image. Last year, I caught this Iridium Flare while shooting the Geminid Meteor shower and have been waiting to re-use it for a nightscape image. These flares are caused by low orbit satellites and produce terrific color in the night sky. Together with the hoodoo, I thought it’d make for some epic digital artwork. As I employ composite imagery more in my portfolio, I think it’s important to note when I’ve used powerful photo editing software like Photoshop to create something that wasn’t real. In my opinion, these programs are just another creative tool at my disposal to let me express myself more fully. I don’t plan to post all composite images because I still think it’s far more rewarding to catch a moment like this in a single frame. However, from time to time I think it’s fun to switch it up and do something different. What are your thoughts about composite imagery?
