Today we mourn the loss of Lamont Dozier, one of the most accomplished songwriters and producers of our time.
Alongside brothers Brian and Eddie Holland, the trio quickly rose to fame after joining Motown Records in 1962. For the next decade, Holland-Dozier-Holland, went on to create over 80 singles that landed on the Top 40 of the pop or R&B charts, including 15 songs that reached No1. From the Supreme’s “You Can’t Hurry Love to The Four Tops’s “I Can’t Help Myself” (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch) to The Isley Brother’s “This Old Heart of Mine,” Lamont Dozier and the Holland brothers greatly contributed to the universal and timeless significance of Motown Records.
In addition to providing us with countless classics Lamont Dozier shared a wealth of knowledge of in his memoir How Sweet It Is: A Songwriter’s Reflections On Music, Motown and the Mystery of the Muse including, “Always put the song ahead of your ego.” He did that and so much more and will be deeply missed.
