Only 1 week left to see Charles Gaines’ grove of Sweetgum trees in Times Square–on view until September 23.
Stripped, painted, and inverted with their vast root systems reaching skyward, ‘Roots’ is a dystopian echo of the natural abundance that long preceded Times Square. Gaines places the story of the indigenous landscape’s systemic excavation and exploitation that founded this country in the modern day center of American commerce and capitalism.
‘Roots’ marks the inaugural chapter of ‘The American Manifest’ - a multi-sited exhibition featuring Gaines’ [@charlesgainesstudio] first public artworks, presented by Times Square Arts [@tsqarts] Creative Time [@creativetime] and Governors Island Arts [@governorsisland]. Stay tuned for more on the unveiling of ‘Moving Chains’ on Governors Island this fall!
