You might have not yet heard of the traditional Finnish delicacies out there. Here are some scrumptious treats to look out for on your next visit! 😉
🐟Kalakukko, meaning ́fish rooster ́ in Finnish, is a traditional Savonian take on surf ́n turf. This savoury pie has fish, often vendace or European perch, with pork and bacon baked inside a loaf of rye bread. In other words, a perfect meal to take on a trip in the wilderness!
🌾Karjalanpiirakka, or Karelian pie, is a popular snack from the region of Karelia in the east of Finland. Nowadays, the thin rye-based crust of the pie is most often filled with rice, and served with egg butter, which is, as the name suggests, butter mixed with boiled chopped-up egg.
🦌You might also come across reindeer meat, served in many restaurants in Finland. This free-range venison is very tender, high in vitamins, and low in fat. Given the opportunity, try out sautéed reindeer – a traditional dish served with mashed potatoes and lingonberries.
🥔Rönttönen is another specialty from the Eastern part of Finland. This thin rye crust pie from Kainuu has a sweetened potato mash filling seasoned with lingonberry. Pair it with a coffee and enjoy it as a quick bite.
