Let's talk about the jewelry of California’s Gold Rush! The swift inflow of newfound gold into the national money supply sparked a boom in the American economy and, along with all of the other businesses that flourished during the heyday of California’s Gold Rush, the jewelry industry took advantage of new opportunities that the abundance of this coveted element provided.
During the goldrush, jewelers’ best customers were the wealthiest prospectors. Since gold was used as currency, the average prospector did not have the discretionary funds necessary to purchase jewelry, and those who did were happy to acquire pieces that were proof of their success. The jewels often had nuggets as a focal point which were used as pendants, on extravagant necklaces, and watch chains. Gold in quartz was also used to create arresting watch chains (which sometimes included nuggets), pendants, and brooches. Jewelry created during the period usually incorporated the Victorian design elements.
Very little original jewelry from the Gold Rush era exists today. From the extremely rare gold in quartz brooches, pins, and watch chains, to actual gold nugget fob chains and necklaces, these pieces—treasures—are infused with an indelible part of California’s history and are priceless collectibles.
