We want the stranger to be one of our own, someone we can understand.” I started writing this book only for a small group of people, my family and friends, the ones closest to me, who had grown up with me in Malaysia and who still surround me now. It was supposed to be a private affair, something only we could understand, full of our ambition, anger and joy. But the book grew over the years into something bigger.
