Judge Rotenberg Center or JRC The Judge Rotenberg Educational Center (formerly named Behavior Research Institute) was founded in 1971 in Canton, Massachusetts, by a behavioral psychologist named Matthew Israel. The facility was to house people with developmental disabilities, emotional disorders, and autistic-like behaviors. JRC is known for using the Graduated Electronic Decelerator (GED), a behavior modification device that administers electric shocks to residents through remote control. The device was designed by Matthew Israel, the institute’s founder and is used at this institution only. Despite research that shows electric shock aversion therapy causes more harm than good and cases where this methodology was clearly abused, JRC Is still open and operating today with the GED at the center of its “treatment.” It’s time to #stoptheshock.
