“Reinventing the Américas: Construct. Erase. Repeat." is a new Getty Research Institute exhibition that questions and confronts early European chronicles of the Americas.
Since 1492, European conquistadors, travelers, and artists have created images of the peoples of the Americas. These explorers portrayed the continents as uncivilized, marvelous, and terrifying.
Throughout the exhibition, Indigenous contemporary artist, Denilson Baniwa, as well as local community groups in Los Angeles respond to the images that proliferated throughout Europe in the 16th-19th centuries.

“Reinventing the Américas: Construct. Erase. Repeat.” is open at the Getty Center through January 8, 2023.
