I’d like to introduce everyone to the Ravens of Epistrophy. The decision to use taxidermied Ravens did not come lightly. It came with the full weight of understanding the relationship/kinship between the status of this bird species in western societies and the condition of being marked as “black” in western societies. I actually looked to procure a human skull until I ran into the dark world of body part markets and got appropriately freaked out. The trade in dead stuffed animals is no less freaky. But it occurs in broad light of day for us all to see so there is that... Blaer The Raven (1-3) is stuck in LA while the rest of their cohort was shipped off to London for @ekoweshun ‘s triumphant show In The Black Fantastic @hayward.gallery So we had to find a stand-in there in London. Just like with Blaer, it took a while to name Madeline (4-10)who is not a Raven, but a crow. Much smaller. And therefore her perch had to be much bigger. I decided to make her perch in a new architectural style that I’m calling Fantastical Brutalism🤣🙆🏾‍♀️🪩 I’m so grateful for all the care and regard Madeline has received from the Hayward crew.
