on the eve of My Church being released ten years ago, I wanted to share some special moments around the song that changed my life.
- a video of the day Busbee and I wrote My Church. we were at his home studio in LA and I brought this idea of finding spirituality and connection through music and driving. originally, the chorus was our bridge. very quickly we realized it was too infectious to not be our actual chorus, and so “can I get a hallelujah” became the opus of our entire project. we kept the day of demo vocals for the final master because the soul we captured the morning we wrote it was so raw and moving and couldn’t be replicated. we wrote the entire song in 45 minutes.
- the first time I ever played My Church in front of people was at a round at the Bluebird Cafe here in Nashville. even acoustic, it felt like a moment that would mark the beginning of a lifelong handhold with this song.
- two days ago, Busbee’s wife @jessiebusbee had been moving out of her home recently and found these lyrics Busbee had handwritten of our song and she gave them to me. through tears I laughed and said “he spelled my name wrong.” 😂 it’s on its way to being framed and will be placed on his piano she gave me that sits in my living room. my son now plays on that piano. the synchronicities of music and connection and family never cease to floor me.
to the little song that could. 💒
