I had a real HOOT of a time just before Covid hit at the last @byronbaysurffest . One of the highlights for me was the Saturday night band line up at the Brewery. I was there to see @vaughandeadly , @ozzywrong and the @goonsofdoom_ and arrived early and happened to catch the supporting act. The band was in full flight when I walked in. I know a good band when I hear one and was immediately hooked. 4 guys manning Lead Guitar, Bass, Drums and Rhythm Guitar. On top of that two spunky gals in red mini skirts as back up singers who were supporting the female lead singer who was stealing the stage with her vocals and energy. A couple of songs later as tune hit the middle 8 the band stopped as the lead singer broke into a tap dance that blew my mind. That’s right... A PUNK band with a TAP DANCING lead singer. Whew. Took me right back to the 70’s in a flash... To make a long story short the band was CUPID and the STUPIDS and the lead singer was @jaleesavincent. The next day as I was raving about the band I’d seen the night before to anyone who would listen. Not only was she awesome on stage, it turns out she is one of the worlds best female free surfers 🙌 I’ve since connected with her and LOVE all the different elements of ART she is into. When I was invited to do a Talk Story at this years BBSF my first guest I wanted to invite was Jalessa and I’m so stoked to have her join us this Friday to open the festival! It’s going to be a fun filled night for me to talk surf, music, and art with this multi talented young lady and Derek Hynd. Hope to see you there.
