On September 4th, I went to the Chilean Ambassador’s Residence in honor of national Chilean National Wine Day @drinkchile. Chile is an innovative and vast wine-growing region, with hundreds of valleys with exquisite grapes from the dry north, to the hilly central valley, to the fertile soils of the south. Today in Chile there are 800 active wineries, 11,697 producers and 394 export companies, 76% of which are small and medium-sized enterprises. To be honest, all I really knew about the region prior to this evening was from my WSET 3 textbook, and the Chile section was very small… I prayed Chile and Argentina were not on my essay sections, because it was just an area I felt weak in - this is mostly due to my lack of exposure actually drinking Chilean wine and it’s availably on menus! After this wonderful evening of learning with the Ambassador and winemakers, I am determined to increase my friends and family’s exposure to the high quality, complex and AFFORDABLE wines Chile has to offer.
