Last week I mentioned a song story Katherine asked me to share during Sunday School.
It was July 2006 and I was in the middle of an exhausting case as an HSI Special Agent near the US-Mexico border. We had recently rescued a small child at the port of entry; the child had been taken by an American pedophile across the border. The Pedophile was arrested and the child was placed into an aftercare home near the border, while the rest of us took leads and executed a search warrant at the California home of the Pedophile. Working with San Bernardino Sheriffs Office, we found evidence of more child abuse and located and rescued many other children.
Shortly thereafter, DOJ prosecutor Ali Serrano, who convicted the Pedophile, also seized the California property (Ali now works for O.U.R.!!)
On my way back home, I was exhausted and close to tears and wondered if I could continue this work. I was supposed to visit the little boy we had rescued at the border (only 5 years old), but I didn’t have the energy. I remember thinking, as I approached the exit to where the aftercare home was, “if I pass the exit, that will mark my final decision—I’m done working child crimes cases”.
I had made up my mind! I was going to pass the exit and be done. That’s when a song came on my car stereo. The song, by artist Peter Breinholt, is called Lullaby.
When I heard the lyrics, my heart melted, and I turned off at the exit and went to the child. I had made the opposite decision: I would be working in the field of child rescue for the rest of my life.
Later, I connected with @peterbreinholt and we made this music video of Lullaby with an amazing performance by @onevoicechildrenschoir. Listen to the words and you will know why I went to the child!
