Artist Nathan Coleys latest installation.
I DONT HAVE ANOTHER LAND’ was a piece of graffiti found on a wall in Jerusalem in the early 2000’s.
Using existing phases that come from over heard conversations, song lyrics, news reports, books or any other found text, Coley creates incredible thought provoking sculptures.
The phrases take on new meaning in each place they’re exhibited.
This one in Charleston could be interpreted as a reference to the climate emergency or the current refugee crisis but Coleys intention is for the viewer to find their own interpretation.
Speaking of his work he says
‘We think words define meaning but... they are actually much more tentative than that. It’s your interpretation, your values, your history and your beliefs that you impose on the phrase that gives it some kind of meaning for you’
Born in Glasgow, and shortlisted in 2007 for the Turner prize , Nathan Coleys work questions how we relate to public spaces and architecture. It is driven by research centring around the social aspects of our built environment and the communities and individuals who occupy it.
We are looking forward to seeing this piece @charlestontrust this summer.
