Saving Africa’s big cats requires out-of-the-box solutions. In honour of #WorldLionDay, we’re revisiting a complex operation we undertook last December, in which we translocated a lion from the centre of a community. When we received coordinates of a marauding lion in Kilifi County, we thought there had to be a mistake: It is unusual for a lion to be so far outside a protected area, very close to the coast and in the heart of human habitation. And yet, the reports were true. Somehow, the lion had made his way into the heart of community lands in the coastal region, where he was preying on livestock and causing a lot of unrest. In these situations, fatal incidents of human-wildlife conflict often ensue, so urgent intervention was needed. It was a complex operation, but thanks to community support and an airlift, we were able to return this lion to the safety of Tsavo East National Park.
