Nina Mae McKinney became one of the first African-Americans to have a principal role in a major Hollywood film when she was cast in “Hallelujah!” (1929). Director King Vidor spotted her dancing in the chorus line of a Broadway production. “Nina was full of life, full of expression, and just a joy to work with,” Vidor said. Despite the success of the film, and the 5 year contract she signed with MGM, Nina’s career never took off due to the limited (and racist) roles Hollywood offered Black actors. Eventually she left for more opportunities in Europe.
