Born to Vietnamese parents in San Jose, California, Newton Nguyen @milktpapi spent his childhood helping his mom make Spam musubi that he would sell at school to help support his low-income family. After learning the basics of cooking from Youtube videos, Newt decided to make his own content to show how everyday people without fancy cookware can still cook yummy foods without having to spend a lot or take off our pajamas. “I just want to emphasize that cooking really is easy, and people should not be intimidated by it” (Newton Nguyen interview with LA Times, 2020). Since 2019, Newt’s viral videos with 30+ millions views have shown us that fancy tools and ingredients are not necessary and that it’s okay to make foods that we can’t pronounce like shrimps camping/shrimp scampi or just sprinkle parsley for that bougie touch. #dopeasians
