Getting to grips with 40,000 trunk muscles is a tall order for a tiny calf. It takes time for baby elephants to master the mechanics, but once they’ve got the hang of it, the practical uses are endless — and vital to their survival. At the Nursery, our Keepers give the youngest orphans trunk lessons, showing them how to break off branches and help themselves to vegetation. Sound up to hear how Julius, one of our senior Keepers, offers words of encouragement! This elephant in this video is Jotto, taken shortly after his rescue in 2016. Now, he is thriving at our Ithumba Reintegration Unit, where he is learning how to live as a wild elephant. If you watch until the end, you’ll see what an impressive elephant Jotto has become — all thanks to the foundational education provided by Keepers like Julius! —— Video © Sheldrick Wildlife Trust #SheldrickTrust #SWT #JottoSWT #tbt #bekindtoelephants #kenya #whyilovekenya #conservation #lessons #teacher #education
