#KönigElsewhere: The group exhibition "Different than it seems. Different than it seems" shows four artistic positions: Katja Aufleger, Béatrice Balcou, Alicja Kwade and Paul Spengemann. What they all have in common is that their works reveal a facet that is significant for the modernist era. A productive contradiction seems to arise between the work of art and its reception: on the one hand, the work is supposed to radically reveal its materiality; on the other hand, many artistic works are characterised by the fact that they pretend to be something other than what they are. Ultimately, the public's fascination with art is also based on this dualism. The exhibition explores this phenomenon in the mirror of her works. An insect that looks like the branches of a shrub turns out to be a digitally animated form, which in turn pretends to be the animal that pretends to be the shrub. A book turns out to be entirely unreadable, for the globe sits within it as a tomography, while a record translates the topography of the earth into sound. Other materials in the show twist and turn in a way they can't, and a wooden stool is not a sculpture made of many parts at all, but a sculpture made of one block. And finally, a few more insects in the exhibition turn out to be containers of great masterpieces of art history.
These and a few more stories await us on the three floors of the Kunsthalle.
