Language shapes our reality. When we speak, we tap into the power of manifesting thoughts into existence. As we continue to accept a new paradigm of visual storytelling, we must also update the way we use the words that describe our practice. The act of making an image is not only intimate but it’s also circular. When we use the words “take” “shoot” or “subject” we are perpetuating extractive ways of being, of relating to each other. If we are all connected, the way we speak about our offering to the world affects our relations. The future of visual storytelling and humanity as a whole is collaboration. If we update our vocabulary when we tell stories, maybe we can update the way we work with each other. Using words such as “make” “collaborator” and “document” is a first step towards the future of creative practices. May we be wise with our words and be open to what we can become.
