“For my term garment/final project this past semester at @fitnyc, I decided to make a garment inspired by King David Kalākaua. Kalākaua brought upon what is known as the first Hawaiian Renaissance for his influence and rival of Hawaiian culture. Following the contact of Western missionaries, they banned traditional practices like hula, chant, natural healing remedies and much more. When creating this garment, the silhouette I chose is reminiscent of a hula dancer's large pa’u (skirt) but with a modern take paired with a vintage-style lapel, prominent during the time of Kalākaua’s reign.
“Mahalo nui @kalalapawinter for modeling for me to help spread and educate people about Hawai’i. Please feel free to share and spread the word and help others understand the history of Hawai’i. Mahalo!”—Rusdan-Rocket Ahun (@rocketahuna), Fashion Design AAS ‘22
