Our lady Merls... To know her is to love her, but only if she chose you. (You know who you are) Small but mighty. Fierce but tender. Incredibly intelligent but playful. Independent but Loyal. She had these eyes that looked right through you. She had a better gauge on people than I did! In 2007 I got Merlot at a pet shop in NYC on Lafayette. I think she was taken away from her mother too early, because when I would attempted to crate train her she would cry through the night. The only way she would sleep was on my neck so that she could hear my pulse. In the morning she would chew on my ear to wake me up. She figured out a way to communicate with me through doing these self taught tricks, which we then gave names to. She would roll in front of the door if she wanted you to open it. She would do twists if she wanted to get your attention and could always find her way onto most countertops and high surfaces especially if there were treats. Her and Bella were inseparable. So when Bella passed I made a point to bring merls everywhere with me. I would say the last 5 years of her life were her golden years. She became a woman of the world on tour with me. She used to be terrified of bigger dogs. By the time she was 13 most big dogs were terrified of her. She was a patient sister to Ziggy. Even taught him how to play with her with out swatting her with his paw. At first she hated him, but once he started respecting her she fell in love with him. I would catch them kissing and cuddling. We used to joke and say Merlot is Edith Piaf trapped in a dogs body and that once we’d leave the house she would poor herself a drink and have a cigarette... In her lifetime, she had took residence in three different states. Had two brothers and one sister and went on countless American tours. We had our first time sleeping on a bus together. For her last trip we even smuggled her into her home land of Mexico. I fell in and out of love with with her by my side and when my heart was broken she’d sleep closest to my heart. She was my home.
