I’m on the flight back to NYC filled with SO MUCH GRATITUDE. The London run of Only An Octave Apart was made so much sweeter knowing it’s success was entirely due to independent press, arts bloggers, and word of mouth. NOT ONE MAINSTREAM PAPER gave us so much as a column inch. When @arcostanzo started to get worried about that all I could say was, “Do you really care what someone who is paid by Rupert Murdoch has to say about our show?” I won’t surmise why not even The Guardian could be bothered to send someone to see us. But what I will say is this: the only way those papers see themselves as relevant is when they are able to stir up discontent and that seems to be what they’re good at. Transphobia sells papers, gets people riled up, and it raises money for politicians but that’s not the whole story. We were a hit because people are, in fact, deeper than that. Thankfulky, we made money (or at least broke even) without the “gatekeepers.” Huzzah! We worked like dogs to do it, but we did it. Thank you to everyone who gave us all of those 5 star reviews, who shared photos, and who told their friends to come, to all the arts organizations that sent out emails to their lists, to all of our artist friends who posted about us, posed with us, encouraged us. The crowds were beautiful and diverse -young and old. It’s gratifying to know the show’s appeal is wide-ranging. I loved how many musicians came -gay and straight. It’s about music and friendship, and loving who you are. I am so happy, tired, and delighted. What fun we had!!! Everyone who worked in that theater brought their A-Game.
