I don’t like the phrase "mind over matter." . It makes it seem like your body is something to conquer – that your mind is strong and your body is weak, or your mind is good and your body is bad. . I’ve been hearing it a lot lately, along with things like “my body really let me down,” and “my legs won’t cooperate.” Phrases like these assume that your body is against you. It’s not. . Your body is not just some piece of meat you live in. It has its own intelligence, its own emotional understanding of sound, touch, taste. It knows things that you, if you stay strictly between your ears, don’t. When you know something in the pit of your stomach, or deep in your bones, or at the nape of your neck, that is a feeling to trust. . When your body says stop, slow, rest, push, go, faster, more, enough....listen. The hard part is trusting what you already know. . My posts and responses to you are typically based firmly in physiology – rate of healing, glycogen stores, lactate buffering – and especially in this marathon season that will continue to be the case. But, I want us all to be on the same page here, at the beginning of a big block of training: Your body is to be honored, not overcome. It is more intelligent than any training plan any coach could write you. . All of this is not to say that we will not work hard. We will work very very hard. Your body likes to work hard. Sometimes that's easy to forget, but it's also easy to remember. But we will not slam our heads against a wall. Get it done today, athletes. #projectmoonshotnyc
