Sequential Circuits founder, Dave Smith died earlier this week, in Detroit, during the Movement Festival. I’m literally shaking as I type this. How do you describe the utter devastation of losing this man...This giant...You can’t come across a man who was more legendary. His influence on music and synthesizer history is simply incalculable. I am utterly devastated. He was THE reason I accepted the gig to go to Detroit and do the after gig, during Movement. Sequential has a booth set up, and I’d go say hello and catch up, when I dj during Movement. We had been exchanging emails two days before I arrived in Detroit to ask what time I dj, because he knew I was doing a gig, and wanted me to put him on the list. I said, “Are you sure, it’s going to be really late!”... I said...He said it was time to live, since everything was closed down for over two years due to covid, “so, what time do you play?” I said I’d let him know when I go to the booth Sunday to see him. He knew how influential he was, and his impact on music, but you’d never know it because he was so approachable, so friendly, so warm, and kind. Most legends have attitudes, this man was that “King” who mingled and hung out and had a good time with his troops. All my love goes out to his wife, Denise, his family, and Sequential. This one hurts really bad. A few years ago I brought him on stage with the Detroit guys in Mexico at BPM for a Detroit Love party. It was one of the highlights of my life. I’ll miss you, my friend. The oscillators on my Prophet 5 will sing a little bit differently now. Life is so precious 😔💔
