A month ago today, I painted a ton of signs and joined artists, activists, organizers, and clergy from all across the country for a flashmob rave on the steps of the Supreme Court, dancing and singing to *unapologetically* celebrate abortion on the 49th and possibly last anniversary of Roe. We showed up in DC, not to convince the anti-choicers corralled a few feet away, but as a signal flare to the vast majority of Americans who believe abortion should remain legal. We wanted to show you, our fellow citizens in that majority, that there will always be people willing to fight for and uplift reproductive rights, even if the courts and legislatures are not stacked that way right now, and we wanted to inspire you and ourselves for the fight ahead. We wore the green of La Marea Verde, or Green Wave, the Latin American movement that has made sweeping strides for reproductive rights, even while they are rolled back here in the U.S, with Colombia decriminalizing abortion in an historic moment just yesterday, following Mexico and Argentina. The truth is that banning abortion is about control and power and nothing more. Next Monday the Senate votes on passage of the Women's Health Protection Act (WHPA), federal legislation specifically designed to protect the right to abortion access nationwide. Not everyone can drop everything to show up on the steps of the Supreme Court but everyone can get loud and everyone can show up with joy and defiance in the face of systems that would seek to crush the spirits and freedoms of vulnerable, vibrant communities. Let us never forget the fight lives on within each of us.
