I am so fortunate to have so many fond memories of Sidney Poitier. What a talent, groundbreaker, activist, and gentleman. I first met a 27-year-old Sidney when I was 12 years old. He came to see a local show I did with a good friend of his. To say I was star struck is an understatement! During our later careers, our paths crossed many times - when I performed at the Cocoanut Grove, during awards shows, and on Broadway. The last time I saw him was when he came to see James Earl Jones and me in On Golden Pond. He couldn't have been more generous in his praise. The ultimate connection was when I was honored with the Sidney Poitier Lifetime Achievement Award at the National Black Theatre Festival in North Carolina.
