Jean-Luc Godard, the French-Swiss director who pioneered the Nouvelle Vague cinema movement of the late 1950s and 60s, has died aged 91. Dubbed the “Picasso of cinema," he famously said that a story should have a "beginning, middle and end, but not necessarily in that order". His prolific output encompassed seminal films such as Breathless and Alphaville which have influenced generations of filmmakers from Martin Scorsese to Quentin Tarantino, as well as shorts and his most recent film, The Image Book, was awarded the prestigious Palme d'Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. "We have lost a national treasure," said President Emmanuel Macron in a tweet. "The vision of a genius."
