Would you dive here? Here are some sharky facts... 🦈 1. Sharks are said to have been around since about 455 million years ago. That’s long before dinosaurs! 2. Most of the few shark bites documented every year are inspired by curiosity rather than animosity. They’re investigatory, and mostly just end in the shark losing interest real quick. Because their diet isn’t at all made up of human meat. Jaws is a shit movie. Avoid. Cancel. 3. While mating, male sharks have sharp spurs on their genitalia to lock in place with the female. Due to this unpleasant/aggressive experience, females have adapted by growing thicker skin for protection. 4. Humans kill more sharks than sharks kill people Sharks kill a handful of people per year across the globe, while humans kill between 75 and 100 million sharks. 5. As apex predators, sharks play a vital role in the health of marine ecosystems - by eating fish they help create balance in the food chain. 6. Many sharks are accidentally caught in fishing gear, and also deliberately for their fins, which are a delicacy in Asia. Their ocean home is also in danger. From climate change to plastic pollution- which could cause entanglement or be ingested. 7. Sharks have a black spot on their eye. This organ allows them to sense electromagnetic fields and temperature shifts in the ocean. The upper snout of sharks is filled with a gel-like substance that’s electrically charged and allows sharks to sense their prey’s heartbeat. Sharks are beautiful. Sharks deserve to live. Sharks MUST live to maintain the health of the Ocean. Interact with them, appreciate them, love them. Share this to inspire someone! #girlsthatfreedive @trulynomadly 📷 @the_sharkguy
