Profiling Cecilia Vicuña was not easy, but if it had been, I’d have probably got it all wrong.
This story - in @wallpapermag August 2022 - took me to New York for a day and a bit (who said journalism’s glory days were dead?), and opened up important facets of history that were never taught at school.
For most of Vicuña’s 50-year career as an artist, poet and activist, she has been ignored, censored and ridiculed. Now, the Chilean artist is having what is known as a moment, winning the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement @labiennale , holding a major show @guggenheim , and soon dominating @tate Modern in October for the 2022 Turbine Hall commission.
Her artworks living entities, with a gravitational pull stronger than their earthly weight suggests. They are circular, ephemeral, and in a sense, unfinished, like our existence and purpose on Earth. Their message is that eco-activism, feminism, and the rights of Indigenous people are not responses to distinct plights, but part of the same tapestry. Read more @ link in bio.
Thanks, of course, to @ceciliavicuna for your generosity in time and stories. It took too long, but the world is listening now. (And thank you for being our limited-editon cover star!)
The dream team at @lehmannmaupin - @sjlev and @alejassan - and @firussellart . And @pablodelabarra for your wonderful insight.
And to @tf_chan for your faith in me for this (and exceptional editing skills).
