Shaimurat Askhabil, a 58-year-old legendary Kazakh eagle hunter and a herder living in a nomadic lifestyle in Western Mongolia. He has been practicing eagle hunting for 21 years. He hunts about 15 foxes in every winter and use them to make hat. He also hunts marmot in the winter and rabbits in the summer. He hunted 3 wolves in the past. He said it is not easy to hunt wolves with eagle because of the size, usually it is the effort of 2 to 3 eagles! Shaimurat is one of the most skillful and experienced “Berkutchi” or competitive eagle hunters, and he won multiple awards in Golden Eagle Festivals, include 4 gold medals in Bayan-Ulgii, 2 gold medals in Ulanbaatar, and 1 in Khos-Agash, Russia. He also won multiple medals in horse racing. Shaimurat has been my host for every of my visit to Western Mongolia, he is the nicest man I have ever met!
