What a discovery in the archives today: Gerhard Munthe, Norwegian, working around the turn of the 20th century. Look at that one-eyed Odin! What a dude!
There's so much style in Munthe's archive -- and work that clearly prefigures Tolkien. Some of his sketches look winningly like the work of the best dungeon master you've ever had. And I'm not even posting any textiles! Or realistic paintings! We are talking about serious range here.
It all feels deeply atemporal to me -- any of these images could have been drawn or painted yesterday.
The Munthe collection at the National Museum of Norway is very much worth exploring. Link in my bio.
