Maybe, you have no plans to pump. Maybe, you haven’t even considered it. Maybe, you plan on pumping but you feel a bit overwhelmed. Gentle suggestion? I’d considering preparing to pump. Nothing crazy - but doing a couple things to be ready if or when a pump becomes needed (or wanted). Pregnant, postpartum, or thinking about baby? Join me @thelabormama for daily education + support! I wanted to share a couple ways to prep for this part of postpartum. These are things to do BEFORE baby is here - so while you pack your bag, freezer prep some meals, or wash those tiny baby clothes, consider walking through this list too. 1. Choose a pump - make sure to see what your insurance covers. Manual pumps are an option - of course - but I do think it’s nice to have an electric one if possible. 2. When you have one, get your pump out of the box, sterilize the parts, know how to put it all together, and have it ready. 3. Learn the pump settings. If you already have a lactation consultant, you can see them prenatally to learn. You can also bring your pump to the hospital and ask them if you’re struggling to learn how it all works. 4. If you are using your pump after using it for a prior baby, consider replacing parts - particularly suction pieces. Double check that your flange size is still right too. 5. Practice hand expression. Unless there is a reason not to, KNOW how to do this. Watch videos. Practice. Hand expression is a basic way to start expressing milk and can help with engorgement before latching baby on or a pump. In all of this, having a lactation professional already picked out BEFORE baby is here (and possibly meeting with them too) is super important. I’ve cared for so many mamas who are in tears trying to figure out how to pump or triple feed or supplement - and their pump is still sitting in the box waiting for them when they get home. Take some tiny steps to prepare. If you don’t want it or need it? Great! But if you do? This will help so much. ••••• Would you add anything? I kind of think the hands free pumping bra is a must, but don’t want mamas spending too much money before they fully know what they need.
