I’ve spent the majority of my life observing drummers. Lately my eye is immediately drawn to unnecessary motion or superfluous notes that are taking up space and as a result, weakening what could be a strong, stark entrance or just a beautiful use of space. (I observe this in myself and try to correct it.) Maybe it’s having more years under my belt but I find myself repeatedly saying Bruce Lee’s quote, “It’s not the daily increase but daily decrease. Hack away at the unessential.” “Simplicity is the key to brilliance.” Also Tony Williams quote from a famous clinic about “Willy Nilly” technique is resonating with me as of late. You can find it on YouTube. There are so many benefits to simplifying our technique. I have the benefit of recording myself every night and hearing it back. There has not been one time where I didn’t find at least one spot where I could’ve laid out and left space and made what came next more effective. Directness, and simplicity equals freedom.
