Built by the Utah Parks Company in 1924, the Lodge was designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood, an American architect known for his “Park Rustic” style. Buildings designed in this style were made to blend in with the natural environment. The use of native wood and stone is a hallmark and can be seen in the Lodge with its stone base and log framing, all of which was harvested locally -- the stone came from a quarry site just 1.5 miles away! Today the Lodge and cabins are a designated National Historic Landmark. Through the years, the Lodge has been updated to keep up with modern standards (plumbing and kitchen equipment upgrades, the addition of guard rails, etc.) but the building still retains considerable original character.🔨 If you’re planning a visit to the Lodge, be sure to note the original features like the paneling and stone fireplaces. The deluxe cabins may have baseboard heating now, but the exteriors are almost completely original (minus the aluminum frame windows added in 1983-84). Even the log-slab siding on the duplex units still have their bark!🌲 NPS Photos/T. Zadi (tz)
