Sunburns sometimes (regrettably) appear despite our best efforts and intentions - what to do then? Dr. Li shared some tips and insights with @hellocanadamag in the summer beauty issue. What are some strategies? ☀️To reduce inflammation, comfort measures such as cool compresses (e.g. ice packs, cool gel pad) wrapped in a towel or thick cloth can be helpful. ☀️To support and restore the skin barrier, use a gentle moisturizer and cleanser for both the face and body. Ceramides and hyaluronic acid, for instance, are useful skin care ingredients to help repair a compromised barrier and restore moisture respectively. ☀️ To increase your overall hydration for replenishing lost fluids, water is a great option but others include athletic drinks or natural sources like watermelon and cucumber. ☀️ To try to avoid post inflammatory dyspigmentation or infection, avoid peeling or picking off the skin (or a blister) - let the skin heal on its own in its own time. And after all the discomfort and wound care: make sure to do whatever is possible to avoid future excess sun exposure or developing a sunburn in the first place - prevention is key!
