‘Devotion’ director J.D. Dillard grew up as the son of a Naval aviator — with his father Bruce Dillard becoming only the second Black pilot to fly with the Navy’s Blue Angels. So he jumped at the chance to tell a story that resonated with him from his own family history. “Where [my dad] was most helpful ... is actually asking about the quieter moments,” @jgdillard told us. “It was asking him really how it felt and how the conversation went down when he told my mom he was going on his first cruise. If he was in a bad headspace or upset about something, where would he go on the ship just to find quiet?
