“Take all that you are and run with it. Stay focused on yourself and make yourself happy. Because at the end of the day, who you are is who you are” - Sheela Awe, as quoted by Pacific Bridge Arts (2019).
Holding dual racial identities and having spent her early years living in many parts of Southeast Asia, multi-hyphenate host/content creator/dancer/choreographer Sheela Awe (@sheelaawe ) understands what it means to look different and being constantly told to prove that she is Asian.
Born German on her father’s side and Chinese on her mother’s side, Sheela has been navigating a public platform that has questioned her Asian heritage. Though she would show the naysayers that she can speak fluent Mandarin and even teaches the language #Mandomondaze in short phrases, Sheela has had to deal with people labeling her as not being Asian enough. For those of us who are of mixed race and are juggling with being identified as one or the other, we can all draw inspiration from Sheela in the way that she chooses to narrate her life the way she wants to and express herself in ways that feels authentic to her.
You can follow Sheela as she trolls her mom, introduce us to common and uncommon Asian foods, and how to become the life of a party with dance moves that may require extensive stretching beforehand.
