In the #MarinHeadlands, we donโt get the typical fall foliage like in other parts of the United States. BUT we do have seasonal changes that bring an influx of color to the skies...
September is the first full month of the raptor migration season in the Marin Headlands. Birds of prey, known as raptors, travel south for the winter months. #HawkHill is a popular pathway for them thanks to the thermal updrafts that help them gain altitude (how "cool" is that?!)
Hawk-watchers with the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory spend hours at Hawk Hill everyday identifying and counting the raptors that pass by. This citizen science provides crucial insight into raptor population changes over time.
You can drive or hike to Hawk Hill and see the raptors in action yourself! As long as it's not too foggy... ๐

Image description: A juvenile Red-tailed Hawk hovers in the air. Its wings are stretched open, showing light under wings with rows of dark lines going across each feather. Its tail feathers have the same pattern, as its orange-red adult tail feathers have not come in yet. Its head is pointed down looking toward the ground.
