I remember when I first heard about @sprinklescupcakes back in 2005 and... I was highly skeptical. New York was the cupcake capital of the world, thanks to “Sex and the City” and @magnoliabakery, and I couldn’t imagine that a Beverly Hills bakery could be legit. Did Los Angelenos even eat cupcakes? (Sorry, L.A. friends! I believed the stereotypes back then!) I was on a business trip and decided to drive my rental car over to the 90210 neighborhood and check it out for myself. The line outside was long. Sprinkles cupcakes turned out to be all that—perfect amount of buttercream, that little candy dot, moist cake, and so modern looking compared to the homey cupcakes back home.
As Sprinkles founder @candacenelson tells me on today’s Radio @cherrybombe, I wasn’t the only Cali cupcake cynic. “Everyone who knew us said they thought [my husband and I] were crazy and it was a terrible idea,” says Candace. “I mean, we were essentially two out-of-work investment bankers looking to bet it all on cupcakes at the height of a low-carb craze.”
The bet paid off. Not only did Sprinkles become a hit, with bakeries around the country, but Candace and her husband later sold Sprinkles. (They remain on the board today.) As a result, Candace is asked for advice all the time relating to start-ups and entrepreneurship, so she decided to compile all her hard-earned knowledge into a book titled “Sweet Success: A Simple Recipe To Turn Your Passion Into Profit.” I wish Candace had written this book when I started my entrepreneurial journey over a decade ago. She might have saved me from some of the small biz potholes I fell into face first!
If you’re thinking about starting a food biz, be sure to pick up “Sweet Success” and listen to my interview with Candace via link in bio or wherever you get your podcasts! Thank you to @thisisfinecheese for supporting Radio Cherry Bombe. 😘
